CARE TO JOIN ME FOR A CUPPA AND SOME BBC?

One of the many advantages I've found to having Netflix is undoubtedly the countless classic BBC productions that are now so readily available. No longer do I have to wait with impatience for these spectacular shows to air on my local PBS station. Now, they are merely a red envelope away! One particular series which I have been thoroughly enjoying this summer is The House of Eliott. This series was absolutely brilliant and I feel as though I've discovered the greatest treasure in finally watching this saga unfold. I remember Victoria magazine featuring the most lovely images from the set of this show back in the early 90's and the costumes were absolutely breathtaking. Please allow me to provide a brief synopsis. This wonderful BBC production takes place in the exciting London fashion world of the 1920s. It introduces the viewer to Evie and Beatrice Eliott (Louise Lombard and Stella Gonet), two beautiful sisters who find themselves in financial ruin after their wealthy father squandered their fortune. With this challenge, and a sinister family guardian/executor determined to ruin them before they begin, the two enchanting sisters endeavor to succeed in the glamorous but very elitist fashion industry. Revealing any more would spoil the thrill of discovery so I will only say that the acting is quite good and the chemistry between Lombard and Gonet is extraordinary. I highly recommend a visit to The House of Eliott. You will be very glad you happened by.

Rebecca, I've often wondered what this series would be like. You've definitely sold me with your intriguing synopsis!

I've recently finished the BBC's mini series 'Jane Eyre'(2007) with Ruth Wilson & Toby Stevens. Despite the dark opening scenes where I think artistic license was taken a wee bit too far, the rest of series was absolutely wonderful.

Now I'll just have to see The House of Elliot!

Rebecca...The House of Elliott sounds perfectly grand. I hear you mention Netflix often...I took a peak on the site last evening and liked what I saw...you seemed pleased so I may give it a try. It would be awesome to just put my hands on all these wonderful old movies and tv series from days gone by....Good blessings for the day..

Okay, put the kettle on! I'm here! I need to see The House of Eliott, so pop it in! It looks fabulous. I recently joined Netflix and that little red envelope is SO convenient. How did I live without it?

Kalianne,

You must check this series out! If you love 1920's fashion then this show will not fail to delight. There's also a great scene where the sisters bob their hair that you will appreciate:-)...

I'm still amazed by your wonderful tea box idea at your blog! I am certainly going to make a few of them to share:-)

Rebecca, you and DeeDee are in a 'roaring 20's' state of mind today, I see. Don't you wish you had been a flapper? I do!

Anyway, nobody---but nobody---does period pieces like the British. They are the masters. I always enjoy them, and have seen so many. This is one I should keep an eye out for. I wonder if this netflix business operates in Canada?

OK Willow, Earl Grey, Darjeeling, or Yorkshire Gold?

Netflix is beyond wonderful and you are spot on! How indeed did we exist without it?...

Lavinia,

I was so tickled to see Dee Dee's post at Love White Linen...I've been thinking of having a Great Gatsby Tea Event and that has motivated me to start planning!

I'm not sure if Netflix is available in Canada but if it is you must look into signing up...It's been so wonderful to get these wonderful shows! Yes, the Brits do period pieces better than anyone on the planet!

Oh I remember The House of Eliott when it first aired here in the US. Loved it! I've often wondered what happened to the actress who played the younger sister. Have you ever seen her in anything since? I've seen the older one in other BBC productions, but never the younger.

Pamela, she( Louise Lombard) was on CSI Las Vegas for a while. I did not recognize her at all because on CSI she had long blonde hair! Can you imagine that? I was so shocked by how different she looked...Stella Gonet is so elegant and attractive as well... I would love to see her in something again soon. I'll have to search Netflix for some of her films...

Hear, hear I second your recommendation Madame Chairwoman!

I finished this series a few months ago. I loved the time period, the creative nature of their business, the actors and actresses.....you are in for such a treat!

(adored the hats)

It reminds me of my fave show that starts tonight...Project Runway.

the story sounds ratehr like my mother and sister except not their father but brother squandering everything--the entire will went to him and he proceeded to lose it and not share any of it. Very sad.

Anyway, yes, would love to see this show. i love the 1920's.

What a wonderful post! I loved the House of Eliott when it came on television. My grandmother had worked as a seamstress in the late 20s to early 30s in London (before she married) so I was intrigued from day one. I remember loving their apartment and wanting to recreate it for myself. Also... Jack... wow, wasn't he delish? :)
