A FAVOURITE ILLUSTRATOR

The Tea Party
by Kate Greenaway (1846-1901)

IN the pleasant green Garden
We sat down to tea;
"Do you take sugar?" and
"Do you take milk?"
She'd got a new gown on–
A smart one of silk.
We all were so happy
As happy could be,
On that bright Summer's day
When she asked us to tea.

Kate Greenaway was one of few prolific, gifted and recognized women children's book authors/illustrators in the latter half of the 19th Century. The essence of Victorian childhood is exhibited in the idealized children of Greenaway’s work. Her dreamy almost melancholy characters prance through the English countryside frilly smocks, mob caps and sunbonnets unaware of time or place.( from Old Poetry)

That is a beautiful little illustration. It is chocked full of things to see. I like that snippet of the story too.

Maybe in 2-3 months it will be warm enough to have a tea party in the garden, huh! Sounds wonderful. Guess I'll just settle for tea in my wooly sweater! :)

This look like a most civilized and elegant gathering. Thanks for the word 'sunbonnet'. I hadn't heard or seen that word in a long time and it really is such a beautiful word....

Hi Rebecca,
So happy to connect here today with you. Since be moved, I haven't had time to visit blogs as much.
I still think of you between 3:00 and 4"00 pm each afternoon as we take tea.
(in far less formal attire I can attest. So you know, I do take sugar and milk in most tea.

Happy thought to you m'dear!
